Cut. Sew. Wear in 3 hours.

You might ask “how can this be possible? a tank top in 3 hours? “

Well, the reason this top can be done quickly because we are not going to finish the armhole and bottom. Yes. I know some might say that is not proper, but really though, its a knit. It doesn’t fray. It will be fine and if anyone asked, we are going for the deconstructed look. I promise you it will look fab once completed.

This Feather embellished tank is the perfect item to add to your wardrobe. Layer it over a white tank top and throw on a pair of jeans, and you’re ready to hit the road! This is a fun and easy project that you can make again and again! Perhaps in a different colours. Perfect for any sewing newbies who want to learn to make your own clothes.

The first thing we need to do is figure out what size you should wear.  First measure your chest and then check with the measurement chart below. There are two groups of sizes, one for tweens and one for teens.

You just need your chest measurement. I created this pattern for the tweens and teens. However, if you are an adult and want to make one too. Why not? Just make sure you check the teens measurement, and be aware you might have to make it bigger and longer to fit you. I use the Teen size M and it fits perfect. It’s the reason why I love wearing knits.

Tweens measurement chart:

  • size S : 24” to 26”

  • Size M : 27” to 29”

  • Size L : 30” to 32”

Teens measurement chart:

  • Size S : 33” to 35”

  • Size M : 36” to 38”

  • Size L : 39” to 41”

What you will need:

  • Fabric: Knit. 1 yard of 55” wide Knit. I would recommend you use cotton jersey knit. Please use a good quality knit if you want the top to last after washing.

  • Thread

  • Contrast fabric for the feather: 1/4 yard of colourful mesh. This is optional. You can totally skip this part if you want.

Pattern: Download your pattern here. It is a pdf pattern. You will need to tape the pages together following the column and row numbers, matching the corner markings. Pattern download

Cutting the fabric:

Cutting the main fabric: Cut 2 on fold

Make sure you place the pattern on the folded edge of the fabric.

For the mesh feathers: it’s your choice. You can cut out as many feathers in any size as you like.

Sewing Instructions:

Step 1: Stitch the tank top together at the shoulder and side seams.

-          Make sure the good sides of fabrics are facing together. If you are not sure which side is the right side, just pick one that you like most.

**You might want to try on your tank top at this point to make sure you are happy with the fit. You can always make it a little smaller if you feel that it is too big. Just remember that  it is meant to be a loose fit.**

Step 2: Finish the shoulder seam and side seam edges. If you have a serger, use it. If not, use a zig zag stitch.

Step 3: Making the feathers

-          Stitch  in the middle of the feather, using a zig zag stitch.

Step 4:  Make cuts along the feather edge. Make sure you don’t stitch too close the center of the feather. It looks nicer if you make the cuts randomly, so it doesn’t look too uniform.

Step 5: Stitch the feathers to your top

-  Place the feathers on the tank top front anyway you like. Your design, your call.

Tip: Remember sometimes less is more, so don’t overdo it.

Tip: Mix up the colours and sizes for an interesting look

-   Once you have pinned your feathers in place, stitch the feathers in the middle with a zig zag stitch. You will be stitching on top of the previous zigzag stitch

And you are done! Easy Peasy!
